CoEd supporters are the greatest. You’re generous, kind, silly, adventurous, compassionate, and a little competitive, too. (We’re talking about you, Rick and Rich!) Each of you has a story of what motivates you to help students in Guatemala and it gives us great pleasure to learn them. As we reflect (and celebrate you!) during Supporter Appreciation Month, we’ve been struck at how many among you are small business owners.
Owning your own business has always been part of the proverbial “American Dream”. And what often happens when that business begins to see success? Greed takes over and profit becomes king, right? Not for these businesses. They are using their success and entrepreneurial spirit to make a positive impact in the world. We’re continually surprised by the out-of-the-box ways that you find to help children in Guatemala get a better education and overcome poverty, and we want to highlight a few business owners who inspire us.
Well folks, that’s a wrap on another Fall Fiesta! We are beyond grateful and honored to have shared the night with so many wonderfully generous supporters (some of whom even flew in from across the country!).
In case you were in the most unfortunate position of missing out on this year’s Fall Fiesta, let us break down the magical evening for you…
What a space! Great American Ball Park had the most gorgeous view of the riverfront, and really helped elevate the ambiance to the next level.
Escape reality for one whole week in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, an exotic town bordered by the Atlantic Ocean. We can already smell the sharp salt breeze, feel the warm sand between our toes and the hot sun beaming across our faces, hear the ocean roaring through our ears, taste the coconut water and tangy pineapple drinks… sorry, where were we? Right, back to business…
What is included in this magical dreamland vacation, you ask? Here are the deets:
One-week stay in a vacation condo in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico
Two bedrooms, sleeps up to six guests
Condo complex includes two pools and 24-hour security and sits on top of a hill with breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean
Beach, tennis, golf and restaurants within minutes of the condo
$500 travel voucher
Vacation must be redeemed before November 14, 2016
Don’t take our word that this is going to be an amazing trip. Take the word of the couple who won this exact trip last year. They say, “Aguadilla was such a deeply relaxing place. The ocean view from the balcony was beautiful and the accommodations were excellent! Did I mention the infinity pool that faces the Atlantic Ocean… and the beautiful white, sandy beaches galore?”
Just when you thought Fall Fiesta couldn’t get any better, we’ve gone and amped up the fun factor another hundred notches. We’ve got some major changes in store for you that will make this Fall Fiesta more entertaining than ever before (no, that is not an exaggeration. It will be better than the very best day of your life. Better than the day your first child was born. Better than the day you learned how to dream. Better than the day your ragtag ice hockey team defied the odds and beat Russia in the 1980 Winter Olympics. Better than… okay, you get the point. It’s going to be a great event).
You are NOT going to want to miss this one, folks, and here’s why (drum roll, please):
1. Piñata Raffle: Piñatas. At. Fall. Fiesta. Need we say more? We will anyway: You will have the chance to bid on and hit piñatas at Fall Fiesta. Yes, HIT piñatas! Take out all of your pent-up aggression on some papier-mâché monstrosities and win awesome prizes at the same time. That’s what we in the biz call a “win-win”. (more…)
The bid paddles have been packed. The auction items have been distributed. The numbers have been crunched.
Let’s count down the top four reasons that this year’s Fall Fiesta totally ROCKED, shall we?
4. Yummy Food! From the bacon-wrapped scallops to the fajita bar to the Bavarian-style pretzel sticks handed out at check-out, we ate well, and we ate often.
3. Framester! You know what’s better than taking pictures? Taking pictures with Guatemalan scarves, plastic fruit and fake mustaches. Framester brought a great new element to the event this year, documenting our fun-loving supporters and their super stellar smiles.
Guatemalan scarves and fake fruit really bring people together…
2. Bob Herzog! In three words–He killed it. Entertaining, friendly, jocular, awesome, did we mention entertaining, Bob Herzog brought new energy to the auction by keeping things up tempo and fun. Bob, if you’re reading this, is it too soon to say we love you? Because we do (we can’t help it; the heart wants what the heart wants).
1. Another record breaking total! So, about those numbers being crunched… No big deal or anything, but we had another record-setting event, bringing in $155,000. That’s right–ONE. FIVE. FIVE.
Whoa. That is the most money we have ever raised at Fall Fiesta, and it is all thanks to your generosity. We are speechless. Luckily, our keynote speakers for the night, Juan and Maria Tacaxoy, are not, so we will let them thank you in their own words:
We are truly grateful to each and every one of you for making Fall Fiesta so special. Thank you a thousand times over. We are honored to call you part of the CoEd family. $155,000 is going to help us continue our mission of breaking the cycle of poverty in Guatemala through education. And that, my friends, definitely rocks.
Fall Fiesta Survey: If you attended Fall Fiesta this year, please help us out by filling out this two-minute survey by November 1, 2014. To thank you for your time, you’ll be entered into a raffle to win a ticket to next year’s event.
What was your favorite part of Fall Fiesta this year?
We had a blast at Fall Fiesta once more this year! The numbers are being crunched as we speak and we hope to have a total for you soon! But until then, enjoy these stellar pics from our Framester booth during the main event at Paul Brown Stadium. Scroll to the bottom for info on seeing the full gallery!
No, we’re not talking about the title of a new storybook for CORP. We’re talking about the many adventures of siblings Juan and Maria Tacaxoy! They traveled all the way from Santiago Atitlan, Guatemala to the United States to speak at Fall Fiesta, and have had quite the whirlwind tour of the US in the weeks leading up to the big event.
They have absolutely L-O-V-E-D spending time with their various host families, and have been able to experience so many new things during their stay.
Without further ado, we present the adventures of Juan and Maria:
Juan and Maria flew to Aspen, CO to speak to multiple Rotary clubs about how they can help students in Guatemala. Maria was surprised by a cocktail hour before one big event, saying, “I thought this sort of thing only happened in movies!” In their free time, they got to enjoy the gorgeous Aspen landscape by hiking and getting to see the leaves changes colors for the very first time in their lives!
Not a bad view…
Hiking with Holly End, CoEd’s development director, and Tom Clark, an Aspen Rotarian and incredibly gracious host!
Next, Juan and Maria headed back to Cincinnati to spend some quality time with their dear friends Joe and Rebecca Berninger. This was the first time in ten yearsthat Rebecca and Maria had seen each other. Things have certainly come full circle from that fateful day so many years ago when Rebecca and Maria met for the first time and Maria’s life was changed by the generosity of a stranger. They packed in a lot of activities, including trips to the Cincinnati Zoo, the Indy Children’s Museum, Fountain Square, and Oktoberfest! (more…)
Ahh, fall. That magical time of year when the leaves turn brilliant shades of orange, red, and burnt sienna (yeah, I had the expansion pack of Crayola crayons as a child), and everyone agrees that pumpkin flavored EVERYTHING is like sooooo delicious. But that’s not all autumn has to offer. It’s also time for Cincinnati’s favorite party of the year: Fall Fiesta. Here are five reasons you need to buy your ticket to this fun-filled event RIGHT NOW.
