This program provides advanced technical and didactic training to computer instructors at CoEd’s 26 Computer Centers in Guatemala’s Western Highlands. The project also prepares teachers to earn internationally-recognized technical credentials.
Teachers in rural Guatemala lack access to professional development opportunities. Low morale and poor performance result. And teachers’ lack of enthusiasm for school adversely affects student performance. CoEd addresses this situation through our teacher training program. Participants receive 80 hours of professional development in an intensive, two-week session. The curriculum focuses on both the acquisition of basic (to advanced) computer skills and the development of effective teaching methodologies for the electronic classroom. Participants also prepare to sit for—and pass—the Internet and Computing Core Certification (IC3) and the Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) accreditation exams. The program thus prepares teachers to succeed in and out of the classroom. Anecdotal research shows that teachers in rural Guatemala with technical training earn on average 50 percent more each month than colleagues without these skills.
