| Mission |
|
|
"To help Guatemalan schoolchildren break the cycle of poverty through education."
|
 |
| Vision |
|
|
To accomplish this mission by creating
self-sustaining textbook, library, and computer center
programs within impoverished community schools. These
programs are designed to improve both traditional and
technological literacy, which are the corner stones
of economic development.

| Geographical Focus |
|
|
The Cooperative for Education (CoEd) will focus its
efforts in the foreseeable future on what we call our
"Development Corridor." This corridor follows
the Pan American Highway from Guatemala City to the
Department of Quetzaltenango in the Western Highlands.
We are focusing our development efforts in this region
because it:
- Is populated mainly by people of Mayan descent who
are among the poorest people in the Western Hemisphere
and who continue to face discrimination and oppression.
- Has some of the lowest levels of adult literacy
in the Western Hemisphere.
- Is easily accessible from our headquarters in Guatemala
City.
- Is located near Antigua, Lake Atitlán and
other areas of tourist interest. This allows us to
more easily attract and provide hotel and restaurant
accommodations for donors who wish to visit our project
sites.
Please visit our Where We Serve
pages for maps and more.

| Strategic School Communities |
|
| We seek to
build long-term relationships with school communities
that have demonstrated a high level of commitment to and
collaboration with our projects. Our eight years of experience
in the field has shown us that we see the most positive
results when we focus our aid on the best-run schools.
At "showcase" multi-project schools like Chipiacul,
Patzún, and Tecpán, as a result of CoEd
projects implemented there, enrollments have increased
and the overall quality of education has visibly improved.

 |
| Evaluation and Continued
Improvement |
|
| CoEd is
committed to making on-going evaluations of our programs
to ensure that our development investments are efficient
and yield the highest possible return. An evaluation study of
our textbook, computer, and library programs by representatives
from Francisco Marroquín University in Guatemala
City was completed in April 2005. Click here to read Project Evaluation Statistics gathered by this study.
A separate independent study that tracks the lives of CoEd program graduates is currently being conducted by Marroquín University. Results of this study are expected in 2008. |
