Small Business Spotlight

Thursday, March 16th, 2017

CoEd supporters are the greatest. You’re generous, kind, silly, adventurous, compassionate, and a little competitive, too. (We’re talking about you, Rick and Rich!) Each of you has a story of what motivates you to help students in Guatemala and it gives us great pleasure to learn them. As we reflect (and celebrate you!) during Supporter Appreciation Month, we’ve been struck at how many among you are small business owners.

Owning your own business has always been part of the proverbial “American Dream”. And what often happens when that business begins to see success? Greed takes over and profit becomes king, right? Not for these businesses. They are using their success and entrepreneurial spirit to make a positive impact in the world.  We’re continually surprised by the out-of-the-box ways that you find to help children in Guatemala get a better education and overcome poverty, and we want to highlight a few business owners who inspire us.

Education Center Dedication

Thursday, March 16th, 2017

“It was just like a wedding. You look out and you see all these people who you love and who have meant so much to you over the years.” —Joe Berninger

It really was a special experience to dedicate the new education center with so many of you last month. Per the norm, Joe found the exact words to express what we are all feeling. Twice now we’ve gotten to celebrate the opening of our new Education Center with the folks who’ve made it possible for such a space to become a reality: the building’s benefactors, new friends and long-time supporters, Rotarians from the US, Canada, Guatemala, and the Cayman Islands, local business leaders and government officials, teachers, principals and students who make the work of education a reality every day, and even Jeff and Joe’s mom! Whew! Did we cover everyone? What a joy it was to celebrate the accomplishments of the last twenty years with you. (more…)

All Noe Wants Is a Hug

Tuesday, November 22nd, 2016

Dear CoEd supporters,

Here at CoEd we never stop giving thanks for you, and we hope you have much to be thankful for as well.

As the gift-giving season kicks off, we wanted to share with you a special story of a third-grade student named Noe. Earlier this year as part of CoEd’s Culture of Reading Program, Noe’s teacher Maria read her students a book titled The Surprise Gift. To exercise their critical thinking skills, she asked them to answer questions related to the story, and one of those questions was: “What kind of gift would you like for your birthday?”

5 Reasons CoEd Supporters are Awesome

Tuesday, March 15th, 2016

You know we love you, right?

Because we really, really do. We love your passion, your enthusiasm and how much fun we have with those of you who come down to see our programs in action or join us at our biggest party of the year. We love how invested you are in breaking the cycle of poverty in Guatemala.

In honor of Supporter Appreciation Month, we want to share five of the million reasons we love each and every one of you. Enjoy!

  1. You never back down from a challenge.

Television personality, adrenaline junkie and member of the CoEd Best Friends Club (that’s not currently a real thing, but it totally should be, right?! We’ll start designing the t-shirts) Ryan Van Duzer recently agreed to live with families in Guatemala benefiting from CoEd’s programs so that he could shoot videos and other promos for us (stay tuned for more!). He had to get out of his comfort zone and intimately deal with the poverty around him, but never for a second thought about quitting.

Who is Your Hero?

Friday, April 4th, 2014

Maya Angelou Quote

It’s a bit of an understatement to say that we’re grateful for the amazing supporters we have at Cooperative for Education.  You make it possible for thousands—yes THOUSANDS—of students in Guatemala to have textbooks, computers, scholarships, and better trained teachers each year.  And that’s a pretty heroic move.  Thank you.

Something to ponder as you drive home today–who is your hero and how do they make the world a better place?
